VIDEO MONETIZATION
Video is where the CPMs are and where the silent failures are. A video ad request can be malformed in a dozen ways that GAM reports as a perfectly normal unfilled impression — and every one of them costs you the whole break.
Render rate is the number I start with. Not fill, not bid rate — render. The gap between an ad that was returned and an ad that actually played is where video revenue quietly disappears, and it almost always traces back to something specific and fixable in the request or the player.
The free GAM Video Analyzer on this site catches the common cases. This engagement is what happens when the problem is not in a single request but in how the player, the ad server and the bidders interact across every break in your session.
You are probably here because
- Render rate dropped and GAM shows nothing wrong
- description_url is being derived wrong, or is missing entirely
- Duplicate keys in cust_params or prev_scp are killing targeting
- Mid-roll fills but pre-roll does not, or the reverse
- Video bidders return bids that never make it into the ad request
HOW THE ENGAGEMENT RUNS
- 01
1. Capture real requests
Not a staging environment — live requests from real sessions, across device classes and placements. Most video bugs only appear in the combination of a specific player state and a specific break.
- 02
2. Validate against the spec
Every required and recommended VAST parameter checked against Google's published spec: env, vpmute, vpa, plcmt, description_url, output, ad rule state, and the whole cust_params payload at all three layers where duplicates hide.
- 03
3. Trace the render path
Request to response to player. VAST wrapper depth, timeouts on redirect chains, IMA SDK error codes, and creative transcode availability at the sizes and bitrates your player actually asks for.
- 04
4. Rebuild the ad break rules
Ad rules, break structure, pod length and frequency get reset around completion rate rather than around impression count — a pod that nobody watches to the end is inventory you are paying to serve twice.
